When school lets out, libraries step in

summer reading afplf

For many families across Fulton County, the end of the school year brings excitement, energy, and a well-earned break from the classroom. For thousands of children, it can also mean losing access to books, learning support, technology, and structured educational opportunities.

That’s where libraries step in.

Every summer, Atlanta-Fulton Public Library branches become more than places to check out books. They become spaces where children continue learning, exploring, creating, and building confidence beyond the classroom through free books, literacy programs, educational activities, and safe, welcoming environments.

For many children, the library is the only place they can reliably access books during the summer months. For working parents, libraries provide a safe, enriching place for children to stay engaged and keep learning while school is out.

Research shows that students can lose significant reading progress over the summer without consistent engagement, creating learning gaps that impact long-term academic success and workforce readiness.

Summer Reading programs help change that.

Through the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Foundation, donors help support programs that provide:

  • Free books for children and families
  • Structured reading challenges and literacy activities
  • Access to educational resources and technology
  • Safe, enriching community spaces across all 34 library branches

These programs do more than encourage reading. They build skills, confidence, and curiosity that support long-term success.

Today’s readers become tomorrow’s workforce, entrepreneurs, civic leaders, and innovators. Investing in literacy and equitable access to learning strengthens the future of our entire community.

With community support, the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Foundation can continue expanding the programs that help children thrive.

Join us in helping keep Fulton County reading, learning, and growing.
