Show up for our libraries
Last week, President Donald Trump issued an Executive Order that drastically reduces funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) that could have disastrous consequences for our public libraries and the communities they serve across the country – and here in Georgia.
Last week, President Donald Trump issued an Executive Order that drastically reduces funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). It requires it to “reduce the performance of their statutory functions and associated personnel to the minimum presence and function required by law.”
The intent to undercut and eliminate the IMLS endangers the future of our vital public, school, academic, and special libraries. Library funding draws less than 0.003% of the annual federal budget yet has an enormous impact on communities nationwide, including right here in Georgia. In our state, libraries deliver critical services, strengthen early literacy and contribute to the economy.
Funding from IMLS under the Library Services and Technology Act helps Georgia Public Library Service provide services to all Georgia public libraries, helping ensure all Georgians have access to the same high-quality library programming and services, no matter where they live.
IMLS provides a backbone for public libraries to support each and every American in communities. Gutting it will have disastrous consequences for our public libraries and the communities they serve across the country – and here in Georgia.
What can I do?
If you value your library, we need you to #ShowUpForLibraries and make your voice heard. Here are a few actions you can take today:
- Send a message or call your Senators and Representatives urging them to overturn the Executive Order and protect IMLS funding.
- Engage with your local library – sign up for a library card if you don’t have one, use your card if you do, and encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same.
- Share your library story with the Georgia Public Library Service to help raise awareness of the value of Georgia’s libraries.
- Send this action alert to five people in your network.
- Write a letter to the editor in your local newspaper explaining why IMLS is important and the impact of federal dollars on communities.
- Make a contribution – Library Giving Day is coming up on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
- Follow the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Foundation on Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn for updates.
-
Volunteer for Fulton County Libraries or join a Friends group with your local branch.
