My library story: Maria Balais
“When my family immigrated to the U.S. in 1979, we spoke very little English. My adopted grandmother, who was a White American, loved the local library in Chattanooga, TN, where my family had decided to settle. As a young child, she would take me and my sister to the children’s books section to peruse for books to check out, and to attend story time. Our reading, writing, and speaking of English significantly improved because we were exposed to all that our local library had to offer. Libraries have always played an important role in my life. As a student, they were places for research, writing and studying. In my adult years, they became places for community meetings and gatherings. I know everyone has a library story, and thank you for the opportunity to share mine.”
