Federal cuts threaten Georgia’s libraries — Here’s why your voice matters

Public libraries across the nation are sounding the alarm after President Donald Trump signed an executive order seeking to eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the federal agency that provides critical funding for libraries across the country.

Public libraries across the nation are sounding the alarm after President Donald Trump signed an executive order seeking to eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the federal agency that provides critical funding for libraries across the country.

For Georgia, the impact could be devastating.

Each year, IMLS provides over $5 million in funding throughout Georgia. This money goes straight to programs that benefit every library user in the state, especially in rural and underserved communities, through the Georgia Public Library Service.

Loss of these funds could mean impacts to:

  • The statewide summer reading program that promotes literacy and learning
  • GALILEO, online portal to scholarly journals, books, and databases
  • PINES, the statewide library network that lets users borrow from other systems
  • The Georgia Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled

These programs touch the lives of countless Georgians — from a child discovering books for the first time to a job seeker using library Wi-Fi to submit applications. Libraries can’t do it alone. They need our support now more than ever.

Why advocacy matters

  • Secure funding for essential services and infrastructure
  • Protect access to books, technology, and education
  • Champion literacy and lifelong learning programs
  • Ensure libraries remain inclusive, welcoming spaces for all
