Family expands access to Korean children’s books

Ryan Brainard and Joomi Lee share a love for literacy and the Korean language. It is what first brought them together – they met during a language exchange program in San Francisco – and has become an important family value as they raise their 7 and 11 year-old daughters. 

 “Libraries are so important in Korea and they were an important part of my childhood. When I see a lot of books, it makes me calm and happy. I wanted my kids to have that same feeling,” said Joomi. 

After moving to Korea for six years before coming to their current home in Alpharetta three years ago, they have a renewed affection for the library. “Books are heavy! Why buy them when you can read them for a couple of weeks and share them with others?” joked Ryan.

The couple visit the Ocee Branch frequently with their children, and they enjoy the welcoming facility and staff. But they noticed a gap – there were not many Korean language books in the children’s foreign language section. With a significant Korean population living in the area, the need for more culturally representative materials was clear. As long-time donors of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Foundation, they reached out to see if there was something they could do to help. The Library’s collections team researched and identified 28 books, many of which were titles that Ryan and Joomi read to their own children. The couple made a gift to the Library Foundation to purchase the books for the collection. 

The couple’s generosity has had an impact far beyond what even they expected. Since the new books arrived in February, they haven’t stayed long on Ocee’s shelves. Requests have come in from across the entire Fulton County Library System, with families and educators reserving and transferring the titles to other branches. Their donation is helping young readers connect with stories in their heritage language, strengthening both literacy skills and cultural identity.

For Ryan and Joomi, it’s a perfect example of the library’s power to support community needs, no matter what they are. “It’s the discoverability,” said Ryan. “Kids can come in and just stumble across these on the shelves. That’s awesome.”

Thanks to their generosity, the reach of these books now stretches across Fulton county – opening new chapters, one reader at a time. 

 

라이언과 주미, 한국어 동화책으로 연결된 따뜻한 이야기

이 커플은 책과 한국어를 향한 깊은 애정을 함께 나누며 인연을 시작했습니다. 두 사람은 샌프란시스코에서 한국어와 영어 언어 교환 파트너로 처음 만나게 되었고, 지금은 7살, 11살 두 딸을 키우며 ‘언어와 독서’라는 가치를 소중한 가족 문화로 이어가고 있습니다.

“한국에서는 도서관이 정말 중요한 공간이에요. 제 어린 시절 도서관은 늘 편안하고 행복한 곳이었죠. 우리 아이들도 그런 따뜻한 기억을 가졌으면 좋겠다는 생각을 늘 했어요.”
주미는 그렇게 이야기합니다.

라이언과 주미는 한동안 한국에서 생활한 뒤 현재는 알파레타에 정착해 살고 있습니다. 도서관에 대한 애정도 더욱 깊어졌지요. “책은 무겁잖아요! 도서관에서는 몇 주 동안 빌려 읽고 또 다른 사람들과 나눌 수 있는데, 굳이 다 살 필요가 있을까요?” 라이언은 웃으며 말합니다.

이들 가족은 자주 오시(Ocee) 도서관을 찾습니다. 따뜻한 분위기의 공간과 친절한 직원들 덕분에 도서관 방문은 가족에게 늘 즐거운 시간이었지만 한 가지 아쉬운 점도 있었습니다. 어린이 외국어 섹션에 한국어 책이 거의 없었던 것이죠. 한국계 인구가 많은 지역임에도 불구하고, 아이들이 자연스럽게 한국어 책을 접할 수 있는 기회가 부족하다는 사실이 안타까웠습니다.

오랜 기간 애틀랜타-풀턴 공공도서관 재단을 후원해온 부부는, 이번에도 무언가 도움이 되고 싶다는 마음에 재단에 직접 연락했습니다. 도서관의 컬렉션 팀은 부부와 함께 28권의 한국어 아동 도서를 선별했고, 이 중에는 라이언과 주미가 자녀들에게 자주 읽어주던 익숙한 책들도 포함되어 있었습니다. 부부는 이 책들을 도서관에서 구입할 수 있도록 도서관 재단에 재정적 후원을 결정했습니다.

그 따뜻한 마음은 곧 지역 사회에 큰 울림이 되어 돌아왔습니다. 올해 2월, 책들이 도착하자마자 오시 도서관의 서가에 오래 머무르지 못할 정도로 인기를 끌었습니다. 풀턴 카운티 도서관 시스템 전역에서 대출 요청이 들어왔고, 많은 가족들과 교육자들이 책들을 예약해 다른 지점으로도 옮겨졌습니다.

이번 기부는 단순히 책을 전달하는 데 그치지 않았습니다. 한국어로 된 이야기를 통해 어린이들이 자신의 언어와 문화를 자연스럽게 접할 수 있도록 도왔고, 이는 아이들의 문해력 향상은 물론 정체성 형성에도 큰 의미가 있었습니다.

라이언은 이렇게 말합니다.
“아이들이 도서관에 와서 우연히 이 책들을 발견하는 것, 그게 정말 멋진 일이에요. 그런 가능성이 있다는 게 중요하죠.”

이 부부의 따뜻한 나눔 덕분에, 이제 이 한국어 동화책들은 풀턴 카운티 전역으로 퍼져 나가고 있습니다. 한 권의 책이 한 아이의 마음에 씨앗처럼 심기며, 도서관이라는 공간이 새로운 이야기를 만들어가는 곳임을 다시 한 번 보여주고 있습니다.
