Color our world: 2025 Summer Reading starts June 1

As the school year winds down and the days grow longer, summer brings with it a golden opportunity to explore, to imagine, and most importantly—for young readers —to read. The Summer Reading season is more than just a tradition; it’s a powerful tool for lifelong learning, creativity, and connection.

Research consistently shows that students who engage in reading over the summer maintain and even improve their literacy skills, while those who don’t may experience the “summer slide”—a loss of academic progress made during the school year. Beyond academics, summer reading fosters curiosity, builds empathy, and adventure.

Fulton County Libraries go all in on summer reading with themed events, prizes, reading challenges, and events that make reading a community celebration. These programs are designed for all age groups, meaning entire families can participate together—turning reading into a shared experience.

From storytimes and author visits to kids’ workshops and teen book clubs, there’s something for everyone! And it’s all free at your local library branch. Check the Summer Reading page for details on how to sign up and attend kickoff events!

How many books will you read this summer?
